Project: Tidal Turbine Gearbox for Power Generation



This is the design of a gearbox outfitted for an Andritz Hydro Hammerfest MK1 1500 kW tidal turbine; the gearbox design serves to convert the kinetic energy of tidal flow into mechanical input for an electric generator

To transfer the kinetic energy of the tidal current, a gearbox comprised of three planetary stages and one helical gear stage was implemented within the turbine system. Three planetary stages—each with overall gear ratios of 5—were combined with a single helical stage—with a gear ratio of 1.57—to increase the input speed by a factor of 196.25. When operating at rated tidal conditions (flow speed of 2.5 𝑚𝑠), the gearbox outputs 1623 RPM which subsequently enables the generator to produce 1506 kW of power
